You’ve seen it before in major Hollywood movies. The cool guy that’s being checked into a hotel asks the clerk for a complimentary upgrade. With a wink and a smile his run-of-the-mill room has been upgraded to a luxurious suite.

If you’ve ever wondered about getting an upgraded hotel room for yourself, but were too scared to ask, then chances are you’ve never stayed in an upgraded room.

Though it may not always be possible to get an upgrade in accommodations, it is certainly never a bad idea to inquire about them. The worse scenario is that the hotel will decline your request for an upgrade. Sure, on some occasions you won’t always be able to get a free upgrade, but it is even possible to sometimes get one at a discounted price.

Timing is Key

If you check in too late in the day there is a good chance that there won’t be anyone available with the authority to give you an upgrade. Some hotel managers work typical daytime business hours. But if you come in too early the hotel may feel as though they’re still able to book any available rooms and may decline your offer.

If you check in well after their posted check in time you may find that they have open rooms they’re willing to set you up with and on some occasions you can get the room free for the first night if you are staying the next night also. Knowing all this it's clear that it is very important to try and catch the hotel staff at the perfect time.

Don’t Be Shy!

If you’re worried about the opinion of the clerk at the front desk you shouldn’t be. They’re not going to take offense if you ask about getting your room upgraded. Depending on the hotel and the types of accommodations they offer they’ve likely been asked this many times before. So, it is not going to shock or appall them if you ask about getting a room upgrade.

In some cases they may have to consult a manager. You should be sure that they know you are not trying to be rude, but that you are trying to make a serious inquiry. How friendly you are may help influence the manager’s decision.

In some cases the hotel staff may say still say “no.” This, however, is not the end of the world, and if you travel with any regularity you can help hone your technique by practicing your skills at getting a room change. In today’s economy it is much likelier that your request for a room upgrade will be honored. Many of the hotels have not been fully booked for the past year. This has made them more willing to negotiate with customers. That can work in your favour if you make the request in the right way.

The reason most websites advertise hotels coupled with airfare is that package deals can be really cost effective. This is especially true if the hotels are located at popular travel destinations. The fact they are doing this can save you a lot of time and effort in the long run.

Going Mainstream with Combo Deals

In the case of some hotel and airfare combinations the only ones that usually advertise special combo deals are the large, more mainstream agencies. This does not mean that they are the only ones capable of offering such a price. There are small agencies that may have good combo deals, but many of the large resorts and hotel chains work with large travel agencies to get the most exposure.

Doing your own research is an integral part of seeking out the best deal.

Using big travel agencies to book your flight and lodging can be a good idea because of the sheer volume they handle. This is usually a pretty safe bet in terms of finding the best prices. It is especially good to browse several large agencies or websites to get an idea about what other kinds of deals are out there.
But on some occasions there are a number of fees associated with utilizing large companies. The potential of getting stuck with hidden fees means that using a large company to book your travel plan isn’t always the cheapest bet.

Flex Your Dates for Savings

The more you book, as in the more days you stay at a hotel, the more you save. Hotels want your business and sometimes offer discounted weekly rates. It’s important to inquire about what percentage of savings you can achieve by staying longer or changing the days of stay. This is particularly useful should you want to stay for an extended period of time.

Most contemporary hotel websites are easy to navigate. They almost all have the rates available for you to see. If you pick out a few days for travel months in advance and check the rates compared to this coming up weekend you may find a big discrepancy in the prices. Everyone is always saying that it is cheaper to book things in advance, but what some people don’t realize is just how much they could potentially be saving even if it’s a last minute reservation.

You save money by booking a hotel alongside your flight. You also save big by booking with advance notice. So, if you combine the two then you will have considerably more money left over to spend on other attractions and at restaurants. Just don’t forget to shop around, flex your dates and watch for advertised specials.

Booking a flight at least three months in advance is always the best advice to follow. But what about when you have to fly on short notice? You might be surprised to know that there are some pretty easy steps to follow that can help ensure you book the cheapest possible flights on short notice.

When Last Minute Travel is Necessary…

There are a countless number of reasons why you may need to travel on short notice. If you have a death in the family, or any other emergency you may find yourself in need of getting across the country in a moment’s notice.
Traveling on short notice should not have to break your bank. There are even some websites exclusively dedicated to booking last minute travel. It would be wise to compare the rates of some of these last minute airfare sites, not only with each other, but with other major sites that book flights.

The most opportune time to shop online used to be found at very late night and early morning times. But, in contemporary times you should be able to find a good deal just about any time of day.
You might also want to try calling an airline and asking about last minute fares. If the airline is looking to fill an otherwise scarcely populated flight then you may find yourself in luck.

If you have suffered a death in the family some places offer bereavement bookings, also known as compassionate airfares. Many airlines still offer discounted rates for such occasions. There are usually very strict qualifications, so it is a good idea to make sure that you qualify for the discounted rate. Also, be sure to ask for the required documentation.

Be Sure to Shop Around

Like with anything you will want to shop around to make sure you get the best bargain. Shopping around in this case might not involve months of doing research. Even if you need to leave in the immediately, taking a few extra moments to call competing airlines or to check competing websites can save you quite a bit. Even if you think you have found the best deal to be had, it is not a bad idea to substantiate that fact by calling or checking around to make sure of it.

It is not always possible to find deals on last minute travel, but shop wisely and you might be surprised. If you are sure to check multiple sources for bargains, you will most likely find one!

Anyone can go to the regular tourist spots. Everyone knows them because everyone has been there and done that. But where do you go if you want a destination like no other? The answer is easy. Just pick a destination …

Anyone can go to the regular tourist spots. Everyone knows them because everyone has been there and done that. But where do you go if you want a destination like no other? The answer is easy. Just pick a destination off this list.

Transnistria

Transnistria is located in the country of Muldova. Part of what makes this city special is that is still makes use of the Soviet system of Communism. It has its very own parliament, police, and currency. If you want to see a functioning example of Communism at work then this is the place for you. This is not your typical vacation spot but its workers canteens, abandoned tanks, and unique charm makes it something special.

Ashgabat

Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, is another unlikely travel spot. This former Soviet outpost houses one of the biggest markets in all of Central Asia if you want a shopping experience unlike any other. It is also home to "The World of Turkmenbashi Tales". This attraction features Ferris wheels and roller coasters to make it a sort of theme park.

Pitcairn Island

Pitcairn Island is a Pacific Island that is home to the smallest population on earth to comprise an entire nation. It is home to only 48 people. These individuals are actually descended from mutineers who came from the Bounty along with the women from Tahiti who they kidnapped. On this island, the locals speak Pitcairn, a language which is a merging of Tahitian and naval English from the 18th century.

Outer Space

Laugh if you will but outer space is bound to become a popular tourist destination in the not too distant future. If you want to be one of the first then start making your plans now. The Virgin company will likely be the leader in offering these space flights and has already created a vessel that is designed to take passengers 60,000 feet up. This flight may cost around $200,000 but this is a small price to pay to make it up into space. It seems even more economical when you realize that you could lay claim to having been among the first to do so.

These unconventional tourist destinations are places you have probably not been before and may not even have considered as possibilities. Still, maybe you should. If you want to see places that few travellers ever do then just pick a spot off this list and start making your travel plans.

But, there is one way that you can save thousands of dollars and still take a very nice vacation. Consider …

Everybody’s looking for ways to save money right now. And, to that end, many people have given up vacations altogether. But, there is one way that you can save thousands of dollars and still take a very nice vacation. Consider a home swap for your next vacation.

Home swapping is pretty simple. You simply find an area that you want to visit, and then find a family living there who would like to visit your area. You arrange the dates and swap homes. This method saves both of you lots of money on hotel bills and food too, since you can cook meals in the home you’re staying in.

Of course, finding a family to swap with sounds pretty difficult, doesn’t it? But, with the many vacation home swap websites out there, it’s really pretty easy. Of course, you’ll gain more interest if you live in an area that has some tourist attractions. However, many people who thought no one would want to exchange houses with them have found that they’ve actually had quite a bit of luck because of business travelers or people traveling for other reasons.

Those who have swapped houses for vacations also report that they’ve had no issues with theft or other problems while their house was being borrowed. Most families exchange several emails and take the time to get to know one another before they actually make the swap, so they feel like friends before they ever use each others’ houses.

Most families who have done a vacation home swap say they would definitely do it again. In addition to saving thousands of dollars, they report that staying in a home is so much more comfortable than a hotel or guest rental. And, because the “swap homes” are often located in family neighborhoods, guests are able to make friends and feel like a local during their vacation.

If you’re interested in swapping homes for vacation, you simply have to join up on one of the websites that carries ads for such swaps. There are several from which to choose; each charges a modest fee for membership. Some of the most popular include HomeExchange and HomeLink International. Both of these sites help protect your privacy and personal information, allowing emails between exchange parties to go through the website only.

A home exchange is a great way to visit an area in comfort and feel like a local for the length of your stay. It’s also a great way to save money on the vacation of a lifetime.

Whatever your …

As if there weren't enough to do in Texas, here is a list of some weird Texas attractions. Maybe you have already seen all the typical Texas attractions or maybe you would just like to see something different. Whatever your reason, these weird Texas attractions will help you to see a whole new side of Texas.

The Orange Show

The Orange Show, located in Houston, has a reason for its existence that is almost as interesting as the attraction itself. The Orange Show is 3000 square feet of concrete, brick, and steel as well as wagon wheels, tractor seats, and mannequins. This large attraction also features a wishing well, a stage, a pond, a museum, and a gift shop.

So what is the reason for this attraction's existence? The Orange Show was made to showcase the benefits of oranges in a healthy diet and its creator's theories on achieving a long and healthy life.

Congress Avenue Bridge

This attraction is not about the bridge. It's about what's under the bridge. The biggest urban bat colony anywhere in North America can be found under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin.

It is guessed that 1.5 million bats make up this colony which makes their evening flight quite the spectacle. They come out at dusk each night to look for food which is when you can watch them all take flight. They can typically be seen from sometime in March to November.

The Cadillac Ranch

The Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo is the site of a collection of 10 used Cadillacs. An art collective out of San Francisco called Marsh and The Ant Farm placed these ten Cadillacs nose down partially buried in the ground. They are covered with graffiti but this is encouraged. Visitors are welcome to come by any time and even to add to the graffiti. Back in 2005, the cars were painted completely pink to support breast cancer awareness.

The Eiffel Tower

No, this isn't in the wrong list. There's an Eiffel Tower in Paris, Texas too. The Boiler Makers Union Local #902 erected this monument in 1995. This version of the Eiffel Tower is 65 feet tall and sports a red steel Stetson cowboy hat that is 10 feet wide and 4.5 feet tall.

These weird Texas attractions take you off the beaten path. If you are looking for something new to see in Texas then check out these sites. They aren't your typical attractions but could be just the right stops to make your next trip something special.

If you want to book a vacation, but want to ensure you get a great value for your money spent then you need to know how to get the best deals. If you keep tuned into the best ways to save yourself some money, you can plan some amazing vacations. No destination is out of reach if you know what to look for, and how to book it. So if you want to escape to some of your favorite travel destination, but don’t want to bust the bank doing so, here are some tips to get the best possible travel deals out there.
Shop Around
It may sound simple, but this is truly one of the best ways to save money on your travel plans. Take the time to shop around throughout a variety of different resources. Find some great travel sites, talk to a travel agent, and ask for recommendations. It can only help you to take the time to shop around before you book something. You never know where a better deal may lie, and that money saved can be money in your pocket!
Be Flexible
If you have the ability to be flexible in your travel plans, this can add up to some real cost savings. If you can be flexible on the times of day to travel or the days that you go on your trip, this can save you a bundle. Try to leave or return on a less popular day in the middle of the week. Be flexible enough to change up your travel schedule a bit, because every little bit can mean cost savings. You never know just how much a bit of flexibility can pay off!
Get Some Last Minute Deals
One of the best ways to make it to your favorite travel destinations is to keep up with some of the last minute deals that travel sites and companies post. This also plays into your ability to be flexible, as it can really pay off. Keep an eye on some of your favorite destinations and if you can be flexible with the actual place or time of travel, that can make for a fun and spontaneous trip. Though it can pay off to sometimes plan in advance, you can also greatly benefit by waiting it out for the last minute travel deals.
Use Points
There are so many different ways to earn points on everything from airfare to hotel rooms to passes to an amusement park—and this all adds up to some great money saved. Use your credit cards to earn you points, and enroll in any frequent flyer or loyalty programs that you can because that can create some fantastic value. This is a surefire way to get to your favorite travel destinations at a fraction of the cost.

Voluntourism is the travel industry’s newest hot trend, matching willing volunteers with projects all over the world that need help.

If you want a vacation that’s off the beaten path this year, why not consider a volunteer vacation. Voluntourism is the travel industry’s newest hot trend, matching willing volunteers with projects all over the world that need help. You can see an area of the world you’ve always wanted to see and help provide local needs at the same time.
Don’t misunderstand me – volunteer vacations are work. You may spend long days working, so you may want to extend your vacation by a few days just for sightseeing. But, what you’ll gain by spending at least part of your vacation volunteering is a much more intimate view of the area you’re visiting. You’ll have time to get to know locals and to understand what it feels like to live in this part of the world, as opposed to just vacationing here.
No matter where in the world you’d like to visit, there are likely volunteer opportunities waiting for you. There are plenty of voluntourism companies who can help match you with a project that needs your skills in an area you’d like to visit. But, if you can find a project on your own, without using one of these companies, you’ll save a lot of money.
Voluntourism companies have sprung up everywhere, and they do help travelers hook up with a project in an area where they have interest. They also verify the volunteer opportunities to ensure that the ones that truly have the most need are getting their fair share of volunteers. But all these services increase the cost of your volunteer vacation by about double.
And speaking of costs, it is important to understand that a volunteer vacation is not free. Most of the programs looking for volunteers cannot afford to cover your travel expenses. So, you’ll need to make a budget for what you can afford to spend on a vacation and then find a program that works with that budget.
To help find a volunteer program on your own, start by visiting IPVA (International Volunteer Programs Association). Their site can give you lots of information about volunteering abroad and help you find links to programs where you might have interest.
A volunteer vacation is a great way to visit a part of the world you’ve never seen and to feel like you’ve contributed to the world in a positive way at the same time. Check out the programs available. You’ll find that there are programs in the United States for those who want to stay close to home as well as all over the globe.
